Harm Jan asked me if I wanted to share my experiences, of course I wanted to do that. As I write this I am still in Bonaire and in 4 days my adventure will end. I don’t really like the idea that after 2 months I have to exchange my shorts/skirts for long pants and thick socks. I had a great time, these were the nicest and fastest 2 months of my life. I came here because I didn’t know what I wanted after my HBO studies. Through conversations with a super sweet coach, I found out what I actually want to do.
In addition to all the activities we do from Bonaire Break, I also did volunteer work. Before I went to Bonaire I had held a fundraiser for poor elderly people in Bonaire. I donated this amount to the Bonaire food bank and also helped there for two days. Once a month, food parcels are distributed to those who need them. (unfortunately there are quite a few in Bonaire) The food packages are put together by donations from people. Every last Saturday of the month, super sweet women from the organization in Van den Tweel (Albert Heijn) distribute flyers asking if people would like to bring an extra message. Fortunately, many people bring something extra with them. If things are lacking, the organization will make up for them. So that everyone has approximately the same amount and that everyone has flour, ketchup, tea, etc. I was very welcome when handing out the packages, the packages are put together by name or family. The people who come to pick up their package must identify themselves. I didn’t always understand much of it as there was a lot of Papiamento talking. The woman who organized it translated it, but the people who come to pick up the packages are usually very ashamed of their situation.
I also worked at a creperie, but unfortunately this was a little less fun. But there are plenty of nice places to work here. I only stayed too short to change jobs.
I really enjoyed Bonaire; going out, touring on the scooter, lying on the beach, the activities. I felt very much at home and welcome in Bonaire and will definitely come back, but for a longer period of time.
Now that the end is clear and I know what I want and I support it 100%, I also feel like going back to the Netherlands and starting my new adventure in the Netherlands. But I’m sure I will miss Bonaire and the people here. Fortunately, a date has already been set that I will see some of the breakers again in the Netherlands.
If you are unsure about participating in the Bonaire Break, I would really do it, I have not heard anyone regret their choice.
Greetings,
Joel
